community: greenbelt pathway upgrade
The greenbelt situated along the lower side of Union Avenue in Upper Newlands was in a poor state: inaccessible in many areas, a haven for homeless people and an access point for much of the crime that occurs in the Upper Newlands area.
The City Council allocated funds, based on a motivation by the NRA, to upgrade the greenbelt. A pathway has been constructed through this area, similar to the ones that have been done along the Liesbeek and Riverside Road, Fernwood.
The project has been divided into three phases:
- Phase 1: Manson Road to Alcis Road
- Phase 2: Cedar Road to Cannon Street
- Phase 3: The open field between Greenford Road and Palpenboom Estate. This area is of great historical significance as it is the source of the Kommetjie Spring and the Mill Stream that have supplied the breweries since the 1700’s. In view of the importance of this particular area to the brewing industry, this phase will be referred to the South African Breweries to consider alternatives for the upgrade of this section of the green belt.
It is hoped that this walking and cycling path will provide a safe and convenient recreational facility for the community, enhance the environment and encourage outdoor activity for the community.
